Champions League thriller as part of tour
Our Year 10 football academy students had a two-day tour they will never forget. It included tickets to watch the Manchester City v Real Madrid Champions League 1/4 final. They were seated just behind the goal where the penalty shootout eventually took place. They also had a tour of the Etihad Stadium, took part in Ninja Warrior, and visited a university. The experience of these unbelievable two days will stay with these boys for a very long time. It was an amazing experience.

Whole School Assembly
We started off the term with an assembly for Years 7-11. We celebrated some of the incredible achievements from the past term, including the Greenpower team’s visit to Alabama (more on that next week). It gave me the opportunity to talk about the horrors of the slave trade, the segregation policies of America and our own discrimination laws in the UK.
Royal Lifesaving SocietyNational Speeds competition
On 23rd-24th March Eden represented Torbay lifesaving club in the national speeds competition at Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham. This was a huge event with over 550 competitors from all over the country. Eden competed in a number of events including obstacle, manakin towing, manikin carry and relay events as well. Lifesaving is such an important skill to have and develop especially being located in Torbay and the access we have to the sea. Lifesaving has now become a commonwealth sport and Eden is hoping to be selected to compete in Germany this year.
We wish her all the best and are so proud of her achievements so far.

This week has seen our creative arts department witness the weaving together of very different threads of creativity. The photoshoot that took place wasan extraordinary collaboration between A-level photographer Hollie Hand and Year 8 dancersDaisy Board and Lilly Thomas. This amazing coming together of talentculminated in a photoshoot that transcends conventional boundaries.
The photographer Hollie Hand, has a passion for storytelling, whiletheYear 8 street dancers breathed energetic life into their vibrant and expressive dance moves. Dressed in costumes designed by Hollie, the dancers meticulously echoed the spirit of urban culture.

Year 9 PE with Mr Welsh
The Year 9s have been competitively developing their climbing skill set with Mr Welsh this week. Teaching climbing lessons offers a wide range of benefits that go beyond the physical aspects of the sport. It empowers students to develop their physical fitness, problem-solving abilities, goal-setting skills, teamwork, and resilience. By introducing students to climbing, teachers can provide them with a unique and transformative learning experience that fosters personal growth, self-confidence, and a love for adventure.
Weekly Recap: Exciting Cadet Activities Unfold
This week at our Torquay Academy cadets, it’s been a whirlwind of activity, with cadets engaging in a diverse range of training and challenges. From practising their leadership skills to braving the elements. Here’s a glimpse into the action-packed two weeks our cadets experienced:
Senior Cadet Instructor Course at RAF St Mawgan: Three of our cadets, LCpl Payne, Cliff, and co*cker, embarked on an intensive journey as they undertook the Senior Cadet Instructor Course at RAF St Mawgan. With just a week’s notice, they dove into the training, eager to learn the ropes of being a senior cadet instructor. It’s a testament to their dedication and commitment to enhancing their skills within the cadet program. The Cadet Training Team from Taunton, provided an amazing training course that has allowed our cadets to get the very best training the cadet system has to offer outside of the school.
First Aid At Work Course: Meanwhile, six other Army cadets delved into the realms of first aid through the First Aid At Work (FAAW) Course held at Torquay Academy. Notably, this marked a significant milestone as it was the first time the course was hosted at Torquay Academy, underscoring our commitment to expanding opportunities for cadet training.
Preparation for the 3 Peaks Challenge: Three of our cadet staff members embarked on a reconnaissance mission in preparation for the impending 3 Peaks Challenge. Despite challenging weather conditions preventing the participation of eight cadets, our dedicated staff braved the elements, completing several walks. Their resilience and determination serve as an inspiration to us all.
Exciting Wednesday Cadet Session: The Wednesday cadet session kicked off the new term with a bang! RAF cadets showcased their tactical prowess as they engaged in simulated combat, demonstrating their readiness for the challenges ahead. Meanwhile, Army cadets immersed themselves in marksmanship training, with remarkable scores reflecting their hard work and dedication to their craft.
Outdoor Adventures and Training: Beyond the confines of the classroom, our cadets explored various outdoor activities, including the climbing wall, drill exercises, observations, and patrolling. These activities not only foster camaraderie but also instill essential skills crucial for their development as cadets.
Looking Ahead: As we gear up for the upcoming cadet camp, our Wednesday training sessions are laser-focused on preparing our cadets for the adventures that lie ahead. Whether it’s mastering new skills or strengthening teamwork, each session brings us one step closer to achieving our goals.
In conclusion, the past couple of weeks has been nothing short of remarkable, with our cadets seizing every opportunity for growth and learning. Iain Ramsey, from the Bank of England, came to school to speak to some of our Economics students. He discussed the current economic climate and spoke about careers in economics and finance.

Y7 Maths With Miss Wooldridge
Year 7 have been working hard demonstrating how well they have mastered their understanding of equivalent calculations when working with fractions. They have used their knowledge of forming reciprocals to divide fractions and practised pre-cancelling to simplify multiplying fractions with great success. They have also recapped how to find fractions of amounts using bar model representations and some more challenging questions trying to find the original amount as demonstrated brilliantly by Seren in 7T5.
They use mini-whiteboards in every maths lesson as a really effective way to check student understanding and give immediate feedback. Any misconceptions or misunderstanding can be identified and acted on quickly to support learning. Students enjoy the opportunity for low-stakes practice and show excellent engagement and participation using the whiteboards.
Students in the Y7 maths intervention during tutor time have made superb progress recapping on some Cycle 2 skills. Miss Wooldridge has been very impressed with how well they have developed their understanding of ordering and calculating with decimals.
Science with Mr Swettenham
Mr Swettenham’s 7Q7 class have enjoyed nearly three whole cycles of Science with plenty of practical’s this year. This week they have been learning about kinetic theory and changes of states.Within this week’s practical, the class added heat energy to stearic acid and observed how the temperature of the substance remained constant whilst undergoing a change of state.7Q7 then used their results to plot a graph demonstrating this.

Louis Tillen
Last Sunday, Louis Tillen, from year 9, played in the Devon Cup final at his team Exeter Athletic RFC’s home ground, Bravelands. They entertained a very strong U14 Newton Abbot RFC side, who were undefeated in 2 years.It was a fierce encounter, with both sides playing a very physical game, but Louis’ team came out on top, with an incredible 40-22 win, being crowned champions of Devon in front of a huge home crowd!
