What's happening in the industry now, however, is that images are either digitized or created digitally and then written by computers right to the printing plate. That creates a host of new opportunities for Kodak to create hardware, software and high-margin consumables. "We expect computer-to-plate sales to skyrocket in the next five years," Simmonds said. Bloomberg News reports that the alliance comes as Heidelberger Druck is trying to digest money-losing competitor Linotype-Hell AG, which Heidelberger took control of last year. By linking up with Kodak, Heidelberger is trying to avoid falling behind as digital-imaging technology permeates the printing and imaging industry at an accelerating rate, analysts said.

"The traditional printing business is losing ground to other methods and this would seem to signal Heidelberger's intention to remain on top of the industry," Peter Metzger, an analyst at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, told Bloomberg. Kodak makes printing plates at its sprawling plant in Windsor, Colo. But the digital-imaging technology that it has developed is becoming pervasive in each of its businesses and creates all sorts of opportunities for new products and services. Consider digital Even as the industry migrates to computer-to-plate, customers of commercial printers such as ad agencies -are going to want to preview or "proof" the work before it is printed. Kodak sells proofing systems that employ thermal printers.

Those machines can print out a "proof" that lets the ad agency see what the ad looks like in hard -copy form. "Digital proofing is expected to grow to more than a $1 billion business in less than five years," Simmonds said. Jobs FROM PAGE 8B tararo, a state economic-development spokeswoman. Foodlink FROM PAGE 1B Foodlink is working on ways to attack the problems from different directions, such as job training. It also hopes to set people up in their own food-related businesses. "We're looking to foster the growth of micro-enterprise," Ferraro says. "If the best social program is a job, how much better is it to own your own job?" The Rev. Gordon Webster, the community of churches' president, says Ferraro exemplifies what the organization strives for.

"Foodlink has gone from an effort of people who care to an effort of people who care with real competence, and Tom Ferraro is the cause of that competence," Webster says. Encouragement of Ferraro and other people who act out their faith is vital to the future, says Rosemary Foot-Prior, a volunteer who helped organize the awards celebration. "This is about servanthood," she says. "It is the only way we are going to survive as a nation. Churches can't do everything; corporations can't do anything.

Each one of us has to give back. And there is no job that is too little." Child is hurt, arsenal discovered, man arrested THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SOLVAY A man was charged with endangering two young children after police found a homemade bomb among a personal arsenal in his house. Syracuse and Solvay police disarmed the simple device without incident Sunday afternoon. They were called to the two-family house at 12:25 p.m. to investigate a report of shots being fired there.

Two children, ages 9 and 10, had fired two rounds from a loaded black-powder pistol into a wall, said Syracuse Police Sgt. Tim Chura. They took the gun from the downstairs apartment of their uncle, Glenn Mason, and brought it back upstairs to their apartment, he said. One of the children suffered minor injuries from the recoil of the gun, Chura said. When police searched Mason's apartment, they found swords, knives and guns on the walls.
