Mulan and Mushu are two beloved, classic Disney characters introduced in the latest Disney Dreamlight Valley update. If you’re anything like me, you’re eager to unlock them, but that can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. Here are the steps you need to take to unlock Mulan and Mushu in Disney Dreamlight Valley!
Unlock the Realm
The first step necessary to unlock Mulan and Mushu is to open the door to their realm for 15,000 dreamlight. To get dreamlight, you need to complete various tasks such as dreamlight duties. To see what you need to work on, open the pause menu and open the dreamlight tab. Once that’s open, you can scroll through the different categories to see which ones you must complete.
Once you’re in the realm, you’ll be able to find Mushu next to a tent in the camp. After you’ve talked to him, you’ll unlock the “A New Recruit” quest.
A New Recruit
“A New Recruit” is the first quest you’ll complete in the Mulan Realm. The first step of this is to clean up the camp. You’ll need to explore the camp while picking up rice spills with your shovel and breaking rocks with your pickaxe. The last part of this quest section is picking up the cauldron at the camp entrance.
After cleaning everything up, talk to Mushu again; he’ll tell you to find pieces of your missing uniform. You’ll need to find socks, a shirt, pants, and shoes. If you have trouble locating any items, they will sparkle to catch your attention!
The socks and shirt are located inside the camp in some tents. The socks are in the final tent on the left row, and the shirt is in the tent next to the gong.
The pants and shoes are the easiest ones to find because they’re out in the open. The pants can be found in a tree right outside of the camp. After grabbing those, follow the dirt path upwards, and you’ll find the shoes sitting on some rocks.
After you find these items, head back to the camp and talk to Mushu, who will put everything together for you to change into. To change into the outfit, open your inventory and go to the sidebar. In the sidebar, open the closet; the icon will be a T-shirt. Once you’re in the closet, click on Mushu’s face and then select the uniform.
You’ll have to talk to Mushu again after this. After this conversation, you must prepare Mushu’s Congee for Mulan’s breakfast. If you don’t know the recipe, you can learn it with the book Mushu gives you. Go to your inventory, click on the book, and then click learn.
Once you’ve learned Mushu’s Congee, you can grab the ingredients off the table by the camp entrance or use your own. There’s a fire pit right by Mushu that you can use to prepare the congee. Once it’s in your inventory, you’ll ring the gong to wake Mulan up.
The Dragon Army
To start “The Dragon Army” quest, you must talk to Mushu after meeting Mulan. This is when you start prepping the camp for any disaster, so he’ll ask you to search for materials to build some dragon statues. These materials consist of various flowers, wood, and dirt that can all be found outside the camp.
After collecting everything, head to the crafting table by the camp entrance and craft the dragon statues. The game will automatically select the amount of statues you’ll need. After you talk to Mushu again, you’ll have to place some wood and the statues in the kiln next to the table you used to get the ingredients for Mushu’s Congee.
Now, you’ll have to wait real-world time for the statues to finish burning in the kiln, so go talk to Mulan and work on her quests while you wait.

Defender’s Training
This quest has three parts to it, and it’s split into three smaller quests. Don’t let this overwhelm you; you don’t have to rush and can complete them in any order.
The first of this three-part quest is “Orienteering.” To start this part, talk to Mulan and follow her to the maze she and Mushu built for training. She’ll give you some training weights to equip and carry through the challenge. This item equips just like a tool, so look in your inventory, not the closet menu.
The maze is easy enough, but you’ll have to pick up some pebbles while completing it. These are pretty easy to find, you’ll want to look for glittering items on the ground and listen for the sound effect over the music. The hardest one for me to find was the one right behind the door of the maze entrance. Other than that one, they’re all out in the open.
Once you’ve collected the pebbles, talk to Mulan again and exit the maze. After this, you can start another one of the training quests.
The second quest I did was “Fishing for Precision.” For this quest, you need to catch ten salmon. In the realm, walk around the river surrounding the camp and fish up all the orange spots. After you’ve caught all the fish, return to Mulan, and you’ll see a cutscene where the fish are cooked in the pot you cleaned up in the beginning.
The final part of “The Defender’s Training” is “Brick-Breaking.” For this quest, you’ll have to go to the center of the camp and find the cinder blocks. To break these, you’ll need to use your pickaxe. Once your pickaxe is selected, break the blocks like mining rocks.
Once you’ve completed these three quests, find Mulan in the camp and talk to her. This will finish your training, and by now, enough time should have passed to return to Mushu and finish The Dragon Army quest.
Clearing the Road
Clearing the Road is the final quest in the realm before wrapping things up to get Mulan and Mushu to move to the Valley. This quest will start automatically after you’ve completed your training with Mulan and build up the defenses with Mushu. It begins with a cut scene of a giant landslide that tests your defense.
After witnessing the landslide, find Mulan and Mushu outside the camp where the damage occurred and listen to their conversation. Once they’re done with their discussion, talk to Mulan, and she’ll task you with cleaning up some of the damage.
This part involves wandering around using your various tools to clean up logs, rocks, and sand piles. You can pick the logs up with your hands or use a fishing rod to get them out of the water. You can also use your pickaxe to break the rocks and, finally, your shovel to dig up the sand piles.
Once you’ve cleaned up the area a little bit, return to Mulan. She’ll give you some cherry blossom seeds to plant in designated spots outside the camp. Don’t worry about using your shovel to dig the holes; there will already be some that are uncovered.
Once the trees have been planted, Mulan will ask you to craft sandbags. You’ll need to go to the crafting table again because you’ll use the materials from cleaning up the perimeter. Once they’re crafter, give them to Mulan, and she’ll place them for you.
Next, find and talk to Mushu. He’ll ask you to collect the rest of the logs from outside the camp so you can build a giant wall to catch rocks from future landslides. After collecting the rocks, craft some fence posts at the crafting table and then place them in the long strip of dirt by Mushu. This will complete the “Clearing the Road” quest, and you’ll be able to bring Mulan and Mushu to your Valley.
The Final Steps to Unlock Mulan and Mushu
The last thing you’ll need to do for Mulan is build her house. You can place her house anywhere in the Valley or on Eternity Isle. Once the plot is placed, click on the Scrooge sign and pay 20,000 star coins to build the house.
After this, return to the Mulan Realm and talk to Mulan one last time. After this discussion, she’ll move into the Valley, and you can start working on her friendship level and quests.
You’ll have to do some extra work to get Mushu to move. Return to the Mulan Realm, talk to Mushu, and he’ll tell you about a key to Mulan’s chest outside her tent. The key is easy to find, located next to some wheelbarrows blocking a long path.
Finally, take it to Mulan’s chest, open it up, and grab the Defender’s Sword from inside. Once you’ve unlocked the chest, talk to Msuhsu one last time, and then he’ll move into the Valley, and you’ll be able to start raising his friendship level and working on the quests.
As with all new characters in Disney Dreamlight Valley, it’s a long and tedious project, but in the end, it pays off. You’re able to unlock Mulan and Mushu— two beloved Disney characters that you can interact and play with.
The Guide Hall adores the plucky characters and colorful aesthetic of Disney Dreamlight Valley. It’s a far cry from the usual Soulslike and CRPGs that typically draw us in deep. We’ll have more from the fantastical world shortly!
