There is nothing unique about how thieves steal personal information for tax fraud. "Usually it originates with a traditional identity theft scheme," says David Britton, vice president of industry solutions, global identity and fraud at global technology company Experian. That means many of the best practices you should already be employing to keep your data safe will protect you against tax identity theft. These include the following six strategies: Use strong passwords. Watch out for scams. Don't carry your Social Security card or number. Send sensitive information over secure channels. File as early as possible. Only work with reputable tax preparers. Use strong passwords. Strong passwords that combine letters, numbers and characters are now required on many websites. Even if they aren't mandatory, you should use them. Use a different strong password for every one of your financial accounts and opt in to two-factor authentication if offered. This option will require you to verify your login through a secondary method, such as entering a code sent via text. Watch out for scams. Scam emails, texts and calls are often how fraudsters collect sensitive data. "A lot of identity theft starts with things like old-fashioned phishing attacks. In these attacks, criminals may impersonate your bank or a trusted website and send fraud alerts or other notifications. When you respond to them, you may be asked to provide your Social Security number or password. These sorts of requests should be red flags. "If it doesn't feel right, it's probably not right. Sometimes criminals will pretend to be IRS agents, and an unsolicited call from the agency should be another tip off that a scam is afoot. "The IRS doesn't contact you out of the blue. If you get an email from the IRS, it's not from the IRS." The agency uses postal mail for most communications and will never call or email to request financial information. File as early as possible. Scammers usually file returns as soon as tax filing opens, hoping to receive refunds before the real taxpayers report their fraud. However, if you get your return in first, the fraudulent filing can't be processed. "One of the best remedies is to file early. Only work with reputable tax preparers. Tax preparers have been both victims and perpetrators of scams. If you hire someone else to do your taxes, hire someone with good references and experience. You can check whether preparers hold credentials recognized by the IRS. While vetting preparers, ask what security measures they use to protect your data. How to Know if Someone Filed a Return in Your Name If the IRS flags problems with your return, you'll get a letter before any refund is issued. That gives you the opportunity to tag the initial return as fraudulent and then file normally. The IRS has systems to try to identify suspicious returns. If the IRS algorithms don't detect any anomalies and process the fraudulent return, you won't find out about it until you try to file your own return and have it rejected. Of the two options, the second is most common. "By and large, for most people, it's the e-file rejection notice (that notifies taxpayers of a problem). That notification won't provide specific information though. Instead, the notification will indicate there was a problem with the Social Security number. Assuming you haven't transposed any numbers, it's likely that tax identity theft is the reason for the rejection.Be the first to reactLike
GRAPEVINE POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyNews Release Grapevine Police have filed a murder case connected to a fentanyl overdose. 35-year-old Kami Ludwig faces charges for Murder and Possession of a Controlled Substance. On November 20, 2023, Grapevine Police responded to a home in the 4100 block of Mapleridge Drive for a death investigation. The victim, 47-year-old William Shane Nolen, was discovered deceased in his bedroom with signs consistent with an opiod overdose. Detectives additionally located several pills. Kami Ludwig, who initially called 9-1-1 and identified herself as Nolen’s girlfriend, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. Detectives with Grapevine Police and the Mid-Cities Drug Task Force began investigating the case. They were able to find evidence that Ludwig purchased fentanyl-laced pills and supplied them to Nolen. Grapevine Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the murder charge against Kami Ludwig on February 9, 2024. Ludwig turned herself in to Tarrant County on February 12, 2024. A new law went into effect on September 1, 2023, creating a criminal offense of murder for supplying fentanyl that results in death.44Like17

GRAPEVINE POLICE DEPARTMENT2+ weeks agoAgencyNEWS RELEASE - Grapevine Police arrested a man following an assault and foot chase. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, officers were dispatched to the parking garage of the Jefferson Silverlake Apartments located at 1775 N. SH-26. A witness reported seeing a man trying to get into multiple unattended vehicles. As officers confronted the suspect, the man got back into his car, while trying to flee, and crashed into an occupied, marked patrol vehicle, a parked car, then drove directly towards two officers. Fearing for their lives, one officer fired their weapon to stop the threat. The suspect vehicle then crashed into a transformer, which caught fire. The suspect ran away from the car, and officers immediately chased after him towards Bass Pro Court. The man was caught at Cowboys Golf Course approximately 15 minutes later. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, then transported to jail. 23-year-old Keyvionte Henderson of Dallas now faces charges for: aggravated assault against a public servant, evading arrest/detention, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, duty on striking unattended vehicle, and accident involving damage to a vehicle. The officer who fired their duty weapon was not injured and is on standard administrative leave, with pay, pending the outcome of a full investigation. The Texas Rangers have been called to investigate the case.47Like19
