Konstantin Kisin gave an excellent talk last night in Melbourne, the content of which could be summed up thus; despite all the current ideologies and movements to undermine and discredit this, Western culture, democracy and capitalism produce the best outcomes for the most people and should therefore be supported and defended at all costs. So why are our politicians, bureaucrats and institutions failing to do so? Politicians within all parties fail to condemn - and in some cases openly support - racist and hostile positions counter to collective welfare. Activist groups infiltrate multiple industries including education, health and construction, to the detriment of those businesses, industries and their employees.Employers, SME's and business owners, the backbone of the country, are deemed oppressors and perpetrators of whatever crime the activist class decides is the latest sin, regardless of accuracy or proportionality. Australians are now regularly described as oppressors and colonizers living on stolen land. And if it wasn't enough to cancel any official acknowledgment or celebration of Australia Day, we have ongoing weekly hate filled rallies in the CBD with masked people chanting in support of a totalitarian regime and for the eradication of Australian allies, alongside local councils jumping on the bandwagon. The Premier of Victoria does not feel safe in Parliament. The Prime Minister described any Australian who voted No in the recent referendum as a racist. To have a sitting Prime Minister make an unfounded and unsupported accusation of racism towards more than half the country's adult citizens is an extraordinary failure of leadership and it is a stain on our democracy that someone like this remains in power. And all the more so when the escalating truly racist language and behaviour remains unchallenged. Where is the leadership and support that champions individual freedoms, participatory governance, and market-driven innovation?Where are the incentives for entrepreneurship and efficiency, driving economic growth and prosperity?Where is the public square where all citizens have a voice in shaping their governance, fostering accountability and social cohesion? Speaking truth to power, is perhaps the oldest and, certainly, one of the most difficult of ethical challenges because to do so often entails adverse commercial or personal consequences. I'm just feeling more and more strongly, that remaining silent is no longer an option.Tom Elliott Colleen Harkin Paul Guerra Ken Phillips James Paterson John Pesutto Tim Wilson Shannon Deery Geoff Chambers Alan Kohler Annika Smethurst Paul Sakkal Sumeyya Ilanbey Michael Fowler Dan Ziffer Patrick Durkin Konstantin Kisin

I've been reflecting the past few days on the Race Table Talks session I attended on Saturday facilitated by Laurabel Mba Consulting. Most of us didn't know each other. We came together, as a group of white women, nervous yet eager to participate in a conversation that challenged our inner biases and opened our minds to the racism that persists within ourselves and our communities. Although uncomfortable at times, it was an incredible experience and I strongly recommend all white folx attend. I'm committed to continuing the work to make myself a better ally to the racialized people in my community. We are each born color blind, our stereotypes and biases are learned and deeply engrained. We cannot call ourselves DEI advocates, if we are not intentional about interrupting the cycle in ourselves, our workplaces and most importantly our children. Laurabel will tell you that her son is what inspired her to take on this work, she has inspired me to do better for my son.How do I react when a family member says something racist? I learned the questions to ask myself on if, when and how I should address this with them. What pre-conceived assumptions do I carry that are incorrect? I learned that being racist is not the worst thing. It is an opportunity for acknowledgment and learning, so that tomorrow I will do better. As a business leader, how do I ensure I am fostering a safe an inclusive workplace for our racialized team members? It requires intentional, consistent and continuous effort to make DEI an expected and demonstrable value of our organization. As the mother a Inuk child, I think often about the racism my child will face throughout his life. I will never fully understand his experience or be able to protect him from the injustices he will face. He is a different color than me, when people learn he is adopted, people most commonly say, "He is so lucky". They carry preconceived assumptions and biases about the life he might have had in his Inuit community. I carried them too before his adoption. I know now how wrong they are and am committed to advocating for the empowerment, fair treatment and reconciliation of Indigenous peoples. Follow Laurabel Mba Consulting for enlightenment, education and updates on future events.

"As Northville Downs current location is now closed permanently, this may be the end of the harness horse racing gambling industry in Michigan. But Plymouth Township’s residents have expressed little sympathy for the industry.“A dying, harmful business is not what the community wants for the future of their township, and I hope that you’ve heard that,” Ban told the Board.“Live horse races account for less than 4% of wagers at this facility,” observed Adams, “ however it is still an industry with decades of decline and controversy. This gambling facility contravenes our master plan…Northville Downs holds accountability for thinking it was okay to force itself onto our community without assessing overall residential sentiment–frankly business 101.”What’s happened in Plymouth Township is similar to what’s happening in many other Michigan communities–communities facing Manufacturing 4.0 megasite development, in particular. In Big Rapids, both Green Charter Township’s Supervisor and Big Rapids Township’s Supervisor dug in their heels in favor of Gotion, in spite of rising community opposition to the project. Unlike Heise, however, BRT and GCT’s supervisors never acknowledged that Gotion was operating in bad faith, steamrolling over their constituents until they were recalled last November–by a landslide.Likewise, Marshall’s City Council continues to defend corporate interests, black moneyed lobbying groups, and economic developers above the will of the people. Marshall residents have continued to protest the Ford CATL EV megasite twice each week–even throughout the winter. As more developers and local boards go over the heads of local residents to strike deals for large, inappropriate projects, more residents are mobilizing against this overreach. Michigan’s local communities are realizing how critical their local governments are, and they’re getting involved."#michiganbusiness #economicdevelopment #grassroots

I developed the phrase Sovereignty Before Solidarity long ago because I could easily spot how superficial many allyship practices, and even solidarity and multi-identity coalition-building movements were. These movements were negotiated by very specific touch points, where individuals were assigned to negotiate between communities, without much actual trust. As an analogy, where these communities should have intersected like a zipper, it appeared more like diamonds with their tips meeting. The idea was for folks to develop the power in their spaces, and when the time was right to come to the table as equals to discuss communal needs, find common ground, and advocate for needs each other's unique needs that weren't of the common interest. But in the meantime, there would be a heightened degree of communal self-reliance, and success would hopefully begin to be shared and replicated across communities in order to achieve the critical mass we needed for systemic change, common purpose. The zipper would start forming. But now as inter-communal bonds are rupturing, we are regressing back to the divisive cultural battles that everyone loves to hate.Welcome to the era of irritation.

Ending the week reading this article. It’s an important read and speaks to why we organise here in #Coventry and #Warwickshire. I’m always blown away by the achievements of the disability rights movement, there’s much to take from their organised approach not least that people turn out because of the depth of relationships. ‘The kind of solidarity required to secure a more accessible and inclusive future will not appear spontaneously. It needs to be organised into being. Real organising is a kind of alchemy: a process that turns alienation into connection, despair into dedication, and oppression into strength while fashioning a whole that is stronger than its parts.’ A recommended read for anyone wanting to understand why and how #CommunityOrganising works. #ShiftingPower
