LAPS News:
Los Alamos High School hosted an Activity Day for students to start the last week of the school year. LAHS staff developed more than 50 activities for students to participate in, covering six periods during the day.
Students were able to get a jump on summer assignments for AP courses, take a field trip to PEEC, work in the garden on campus, learn about 3-D printing and participate in eSports tournaments.
Orchestra students attended all-state classes.
Band instructors held a mini band camp for marching band leadership.
The Teen Center sponsored laser tag. And there was also a D & D session.
“It was a good day,” LAHS Assistant Principal Suzanne Montoya said. “There seemed to be something for everyone. Our staff put on their creative hats and came up with activities that were both fun and engaging for our students.”
High schoolers and middle schoolers also had the chance to visit the Be Pro Be Proud mobile workshop which features virtual reality and Los Alamos Public Schools augmented reality simulators. Even a few staff members got in on the fun by driving big rigs,operating digging equipment and practicing welding.
According to their website, the Be Pro Be Proud program was developed by the NewMexico Center for Economic Opportunity, the foundation of the New Mexico Chamber ofCommerce, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions to“guide young people into the skilled trades workforce of the future.”
According to Principal Renee Dunwoody, the planning process started with a few ideas fromcommunity partners and then it was opened up to staff to host sessions that they were interested in.
“We were so pleased with all of the creative offerings that staff scheduled to give studentsopportunities to enhance learning and build community that do not always occur during theschool day,” Principal Dunwoody said. “The students and staff alike were having a great timeand we think it was a fantastic way to end the school year with some fun and engaging events. This was also an opportunity to showcase some of the potential options for WIN time (formerlyAcademic Time) next year. We hope to offer different activities to supplement the academic support that is traditionally offered.”
“The day was a great success,” Assistant Principal Montoya said. “One student even called it ‘genius’.”
