You don’t think UA has created a shortage of seats to SFO on a non-stop? You don’t think UA can now command higher prices? I happen to be on an affected flight and the mileage requirement for a regular award has doubled and so has cash price. Yeah - what premium? Maybe a quick look at prices/bookings before and after a capacity change might lead to a different response. This is pretty simple supply/demand - the supply has been halved.

Thanks, but that wasn't my point. My point was that United shouldn't be allowed to refuse service as it was purchased on the grounds of limited inventory when Untied voluntarily made a decision to reduce inventory after the purchase was made.

I'm not saying this is a rosy situation. I'm simply pointing out reality. And a single person, GS or not, is not about to "push around" the airline.

Supplier offered a product for a price that OP agreed to. Supplier changed product in a materially negative way, had the ability to honor the original deal but declined to do so. We would never accept that in any other industry.

UA doesn't want the 2nd non-stop because the back is far emptier than the front on both. UA is happy to run one non-stop and route everyone else through other hubs. 3 months to go and the flight has only 3 Polaris seats left - I don't know what date the OP is travelling on, but I'm pretty sure UA is selling them at full fare.

It's only that full because they consolidated two flights down to one, and probably had open I and P/Z fares on both. They probably would make more profit not doing this. Personally I would have asked for a downgrade to PE rather than switch to flying via EWR.

Why is OP getting so much flack on this? If the seats had been available when the flights were consolidated, would folks think it's cool for UA to throw OP on a less direct, desirable, and comparable routing? The situation isn't substantively different than that unless I am misunderstanding.

DL was terrible on this front earlier this year. Yes, they got away with it and UA is within its CoC, but I'm a lot more sympathetic to pushback on an extremely customer unfriendly approach to schedule changes within their control.

Thanks - I'll chime in one more time, I actually stopped responding because some of the responses felt like I was asking for way to much of United and they even made me feel like "wow - how is this my fault?", Anyway it's back to being a mute point as its back down to J1. I'm doubtful UA sold those seats in those 24 hours, more likely somebody was more pushy on insisting they get switched onto that flight. I'll continue to check to see if something opens up. I'm doubtful as it is a busy travel day. Luckily I managed to get our flights on Alaska from SFO-LAS switched to the next day before the pricing went through the roof on those. They are asking for $1400 on the dates we need to travel as it is CES in Vegas.

So yes - this switch did cost me an extra night in SF because the connecting flight doesn't make it in time for me to catch the connection to Vegas, so I'm out a night at a hotel in San Francisco. Again not the biggest deal and I did book the tickets separately so United wouldn't be aware of that. I'm not horribly upset, it would be nice to be back on the nonstop but this also reminds me of why I stopped being so loyal to UA years ago. I'll fly them based on convenience/price (miles or dollars), but they are no longer the first airline I look at when making a booking.

To clarify although my handle is SF1K I'm no longer 1K on United, but didn't feel like chaining my handle. Just a mere Platinum due to 2MM. :)

Really? Nobody else wants to fly from LHR-SFO? There was a moratorium on seat sales so UA could entertain complaints from displaced passenger to see who whined the best? No one decided to redeem for full award price tickets? Disappointment is understandable, but jumping to the conclusion that someone else in the same situation as you got the seats to the exclusion of everything else is a bit of a stretch.

No, it's not your fault that you were given a new itinerary. Unfortunately, the fact that there's only one flight means not everyone is going to get on it. The CoC requires UA to get you where you're going, not necessarily on the flight(s) you booked. The option is a refund or a change of itinerary to something that UA is willing to provide. I don't know how many times it's happened to me, especially in last 18 months. Sometimes I'm successful getting onto better flights, sometimes not. At the end of the day, I get to where I need to go, albeit not necessarily on the original (cancelled) flight(s).

And it's not just United that is cancelling/rescheduling flights and routing ticket buyers through other cities (to their disappointment).

Just closing the loop on this. Kept monitoring and today it went to J7. Called in and at first the agent said it would be an extra 320k miles. I explained that we were originally on a nonstop and when I spoke to an agent a while back she said to keep checking on the nonstop but that it would require revenue management to open up the seats. She placed me on hold and a few minutes later we were both confirmed on the non-stop. All’s well that ends well.

Congrats. Still, keep an eye on this reservation in case things go sideways/pearshaped once more.
